The Week Ahead, May 22, 2023: MBA Secondary Conference; More Housing Reports

NEW YORK—Good morning and happy Monday! MBA NewsLink comes to you this week from the Big Apple, where the MBA Secondary and Capital Markets Conference is underway, running through Wednesday at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

Look for onsite coverage in MBA NewsLink all week. For more information, click here.

Now, here’s what else is happening this week. But first:

Memorial Day. MBA offices will be closed on Monday, May 29 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. MBA NewsLink will not publish on Monday. On behalf of MBA officers and staff, have a happy and safe holiday.

MBA Offices. In fact, MBA offices will remain closed all summer—sort of. MBA offices here at 1919 M Street NW in Washington will undergo a renovation this summer, reopening just after Labor Day. MBA employees will continue to work remotely, however; so for MBA members, it will be business as usual as MBA re-imagines its workspace for the post-pandemic era.

MBA Reports. On Wednesday, May 24, MBA releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey, with MBA Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist Joel Kan providing commentary and analysis.

Ad on Thursday, May 25, MBA releases its monthly Purchase Applications Payment Index (PAPI), with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President for Housing Economics Edward Seiler.

Other Economic Reports. The monthly parade of housing reports continues this week. Here’s what’s happening—reports MBA NewsLink will cover are in italics:

Monday: (no reports)

Tuesday: New Residential Sales; Philadelphia Fed Non-Manufacturing Survey

Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey

Thursday: MBA Purchase Applications Payment Index; Gross Domestic Product; Initial Claims; Pending Home Sales

Friday: Advance Durable Goods; University of Michigan Consumer Survey (final)

Congress. The House and Senate, with a very real June 1 deadline for reaching a deal to raise the federal debt limit and avoid default, continue to negotiate with the Biden Administration. It’s a process everyone is watching closely—particularly the financial markets, which have much at stake. Expect negotiations to go down to the wire, possibly even over the Memorial Day weekend, when Congress is supposed to go into recess.

Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Sandra Thompson visits the House Financial Services Committee this Tuesday, May 23 for a hearing, FHFA Oversight: Protecting Homeowners and Taxpayers. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn House Office Building and can be accessed online here.

On Thursday, May 25, the Financial Services Subcommittee on National Security, Illicit Finance and International Financial Institutions holds a hearing, International Financial Institutions in an Era of Great Power Competition. The hearing begins at 9:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn and can be accessed online here.
