The Week Ahead Sept. 27, 2021: Five Things to Watch
Good Monday morning! Welcome to the first full week of fall and another busy week for the real estate finance industry. Here are five things to watch for this week:
First, the MBA Risk Management, QA and Fraud Prevention Forum, taking place through MBA Live Sept. 28-29, is the largest annual event for mortgage professionals in the risk, quality control, underwriting and fraud prevention divisions of residential mortgage firms across the country.
General Sessions include a keynote address by MBA President & CEO Robert Broeksmit, CMB; an update on credit trends; a fraud update; a GSE update; and the always popular Risk Managers Executive Panel.
Breakout topics include:

–Appraisal bias and fair lending
–The hidden cost of defects

Second, Congress. Last week we told you that Democratic House and Senate leadership were working frantically to “whip” their respective caucuses into shape to approve a number of key measures, including a $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill; numerous fiscal 2022 budget/spending bills and even a new voting rights bill. Well, they’re still trying, and time is running out. With fiscal year 2022 looming this Friday, Oct. 1, at press time there appears to be a very real possibility of another government shutdown, which no one really wants. Stay tuned.
Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome H. Powell make the rounds of Capitol Hill this week. On Tuesday, Sept. 28, they visit the Senate Banking Committee for a hearing on “CARES Act Oversight of the Treasury and Federal Reserve: Supporting an Equitable Pandemic Recovery.” The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Hart Senate Office Building room 216 and can be accessed online here.
On Thursday, Sept. 30, Yellen and Powell visit the House Financial Services Committee. The hearing, “Oversight of the Treasury Department’s and Federal Reserve’s Pandemic Response,” begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn House Office Building and can be accessed online here.
Also on Thursday, Sept. 30, the Senate Banking Committee meets to consider nominations, including Todd Harper as a member of the National Credit Union Administration; Judith DelZoppo Pryor as First Vice President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; and Owen Edward Herrnstadt as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank. Back on the House side, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion holds a hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 28 on “Access Denied: Eliminating Barriers and Increasing Economic Opportunity for Justice-Involved Individuals.” The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn and can be accessed online here.
On Wednesday, Sept. 29, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Financial Institutions holds a hearing on “The Future of Banking: How Consolidation, Nonbank Competition, and Technology are Reshaping the Banking System.” The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn and can be accessed online here.
Third, MBA kicks off another busy week of reports. The MBA weekly Forbearance & Call Volume Survey comes out this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET. MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni will provide analysis and commentary in Tuesday’s MBA NewsLink.
On Wednesday, Sept. 29, MBA will release its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan.
Fourth, Economic Reports. The parade of monthly housing reports continues this week, starting on Tuesday, Sept. 28 with the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Indices and the National Association of Realtors’ Pending Home Sales Index (Wednesday, Sept. 29).
Other economic reports this week: Advance Durable Goods and the Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey (Monday); Consumer Confidence and the Richmond Fed Survey (Tuesday); and Gross Domestic Product and Initial Claims (Thursday).
