The mortgage lending business was wobbling badly as 2022 came to close. Unfortunately, the new year likely won’t bring immediate relief. Mortgage lenders generated an estimated $335 billion of new first-lien home loans in the fourth quarter of 2022. That was down 33.7% from the prior period and represented the slowest quarterly output in more than eight years.
