New technologies, including AI, machine learning tools and rules-driven workflow, are finally being applied to the loan production process with gusto. Real results are being achieved through automation that drives fewer underwriting touches and exposes quality issues earlier in the production process. And now the secondary market—one of the last remaining components of loan manufacturing still awash in spreadsheets, manual processes, and data inconsistencies—is finally getting its turn at bat.

MBA Offers FHFA Recommendations on GSE Strategic Plan
The Mortgage Bankers Association, in comments yesterday to the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said the FHFA Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2021-2024 should continue to work toward an ultimate goal: releasing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from federal conservatorship—but only when they are able to do so without risk to the real estate finance markets.

FHFA Authorizes GSEs to Support Additional Liquidity in Secondary Mortgage Market; Provide Flexibility in Appraisals, Employment Verifications
The Federal Housing Finance Agency yesterday issued two directives to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—one to enter into additional dollar roll transactions to provide mortgage-backed securities investors with short-term financing of their positions; and the other to provide alternative flexibilities to satisfy appraisal requirements and employment verification requirements.
