The Week Ahead, May 8, 2023: MBA Legal Issues Conference, CMST and National Delinquency Survey

Good morning and happy Monday! MBA is busy this week, so let’s get right to it:

MBA Spring Conferences. The MBA Legal Issues & Regulatory Compliance Conference is underway, running through Wednesday, May 10 in Austin, Texas. For more information, click here.

And starting on Tuesday, May 9, the MBA Commercial/Multifamily Housing Servicing and Technology Conference gets underway in Chicago, running through Friday, May 12. MBA Commercial/Multifamily NewsLink and MBA NewsLink will provide onsite coverage. For more information, click here.

The MBA spring conference schedule wraps up later this month with the MBA Secondary and Capital Markets Conference & Expo, taking place May 21-24 at the Marriott Marquis in New York. You still have time to register; for more information, click here.

MBA Reports. On Tuesday, May 9, MBA releases its monthly Mortgage Credit Availability Index, with MBA Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist Joel Kan providing commentary and analysis.

Wednesday, May 10, MBA releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey, with Kan again providing commentary and analysis.

This Thursday, May 11, MBA releases it quarterly National Delinquency Survey. MBA Vice President of Industry Analysis Marina Walsh, CMB, will provide commentary and analysis.

And on Friday, May 12, MBA is tentatively scheduled to release its quarterly Commercial/Multifamily Originations report, with commentary and analysis from MBA Head of Commercial/Multifamily Research Jamie Woodwell.

Other Economic Reports. The second week of the month is usually the slowest for economic reports. In addition to the scheduled MBA reports above, the only major reports coming out this week are the Consumer Price Index (Wednesday), the key measure of inflation the Federal Reserve uses in its economic deliberations; and the weekly Initial Claims for unemployment insurance (Thursday), which as of late has been somewhat higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Congress. The House and Senate return to Capitol Hill this week. The Senate Banking Committee holds no hearings of interest to the real estate finance industry; however, the House Financial Services Committee holds three hearings of interest:

On Wednesday, May 10, a joint Financial Services-Agriculture subcommittee hearing takes place on The Future of Digital Assets: Measuring the Regulatory Gaps in the Digital Asset Markets. The hearing begins at 9:30 a.m. ET in room 1100 Longworth House Office Building and can be accessed online here.

Also on Wednesday, May 10, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Monetary Policy holds a hearing on Federal Responses to Recent Bank Failures. The hearing begins at 2:00 p.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn House Office Building and can be accessed online here.

On Thursday, May 11, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations holds a hearing on Oversight of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank: GAO’s Preliminary Review. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2200 Rayburn and can be accessed online here.
