The Week Ahead Nov. 1, 2021: Five Things to Watch

Good morning and happy November! Halloween: done. Next: Thanksgiving. Already in progress: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Movie Extravaganza. Here are five things to look for this week:

First, this Tuesday, Nov. 2 is Election Day in two states (New Jersey and Virginia), as  well as several municipalities nationwide. Please get out and vote.

Second, Congress. The one-step-forward-two-steps-back dance continues in Congress, where Democrats are this close to passing some sort of infrastructure bill (that looks little like the $3.5 trillion package originally proposed by the Biden Administration). Like Whack-a-Mole, every time the Democratic leadership thinks it has its ducks in a row, someone else pops up. All we can tell you is, “stay tuned.”

Third, MBA kicks off another busy week of reports. The MBA weekly (for now) Forbearance & Call Volume Survey comes out this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET. MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni will provide analysis and commentary in Tuesday’s MBA NewsLink. Because the numbers continue to move back toward pre-pandemic levels, the Weekly Forbearance & Call Volume Report is expected to become the Monthly Forbearance & Call Volume Survey soon.

On Wednesday, Nov. 3, MBA will release its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan. Looking ahead, the monthly MBA Mortgage Credit Availability Index will be out within the next two weeks.

Fourth, Economic Reports. The first week of the month is always heavy on the jobs market, with the ADP National Employment Report (Wednesday); Initial Claims (Thursday) and the Employment Situation (Friday). MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni will provide commentary and analysis on the employment report in the Monday, Nov. 8 edition of MBA NewsLink.

Other reports of interest this week:

Monday: Construction; Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Survey

Tuesday: CoreLogic Home Price Index

Wednesday: Institute for Supply Management Non-Manufacturing Index; Manufacturing, Shipments & Orders

Thursday: International Trade; Productivity & Costs
