The Week Ahead Nov. 15, 2021: The Calm Before The Black Friday(s)

Good morning! Happy week before Thanksgiving Week. Here are a few things to look out for this week:

First, Congress. With proof that The House and Senate can pass legislation—as evidenced earlier this month when it passed President Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure package—Congress returns this week with new urgency on fiscal 2022 spending bills and further negotiations on a spending cap. The government remains funded through Dec. 9—but that’s not a lot of time at all in Congress-time.

Second, MBA kicks off another busy week of reports. On Tuesday, Nov. 16, MBA issues its monthly Builder Applications Survey, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan.

On Wednesday, Nov. 10, MBA will release its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey, also with commentary and analysis from Kan.

Third, Economic Reports. The third week of the month kicks off a busy period for housing reports—even more compressed because of the upcoming Thanksgiving holidays. Here are economic reports of interest this week:

Monday: Empire State Manufacturing Survey

Tuesday: National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index; Imports/Exports; Industrial Production/Capacity Utilization; Advance Retail Sales; Business Inventories

Wednesday: New Residential Construction

Thursday: Initial Claims; Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Survey; The Conference Board Leading Economic Indicators
