The Week Ahead Jan. 3, 2022: Five Things to Know

First, MBA January Conferences. This month features two conferences in which you still have time to register: the MISMO Winter Summit and the MBA Independent Mortgage Bankers Conference.

Second, MBA Reports. MBA releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey this Wednesday, Jan. 5, covering the past two weeks (there was no report over the holidays). MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan will provide analysis and commentary.
Tentatively scheduled for this week: the monthly MBA Mortgage Credit Availability Index for Thursday, Jan. 6, although the report could hold until next Tuesday, Jan. 11.
Third, Housing & Economic Reports. A lot of year-end housing and economic data becomes available this week (those marked in bold/italic indicate reports of which MBA NewsLink will provide coverage):
Tuesday: CoreLogic Home Price Index; Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Index; JOLTS (Job Openings & Labor Turnover Survey
Wednesday: ADP National Employment Report
Thursday: Initial Claims; Trade Balance; Institute for Supply Management Non-Manufacturing Index; Manufacturing, Shipments and Orders
Friday: Employment Situation (with analysis and commentary by MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni)
Fourth, Congress. The second session of the 117th Congress gets underway this morning, Jan. 3, with the Senate called to order. The House reconvenes next Monday, Jan. 10.
The Senate Banking Committee gets right to business this week; the Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation and Community Development holds a hearing on Wednesday, Jan. 5, on “Exploring How Community Development Financial Institutions Support Underserved Communities.” The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Dirksen Senate Building room 538 and can be accessed online here.
