The Week Ahead

Good morning! Welcome back from the Memorial Day holiday—or, as we working remotely folks call it, “Monday.”

Welcome to Week 12 of the Coronapacolypse. To all of you: thank you for what you are doing. Stay healthy and safe.

Fresh off the success of its first virtual conference last week—MBA Live: State of the Industry, which drew more than 2,000 participants—the Mortgage Bankers Association plunges right in again over the next two weeks, starting today with the second in its series, MBA Live: Legal Issues and Regulatory Compliance Conference.

With your safety in mind, MBA has shifted the conference location to an online interactive platform where you’ll receive high-quality content. The Conference will cover key issues facing the real estate finance industry’s legal and compliance communities. COVID-19 related topics will be at the top of that list. Sessions will offer actionable advice and the opportunity to interact with speakers through live Q&A and audience polling.

Speakers include MBA President and CEO Bob Broeksmit, CMB; Brian Johnson, Former Deputy Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Partner with Alston & Bird LLP; Stergios “Terry” Theologides, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary with Fannie Mae; Amy Bishop, General Counsel with Quicken Loans Inc.; Ricardo Anzaldua, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary with Freddie Mac; Nanci L. Weissgold, Partner with Alston & Bird; and Phillip Schulman, Partner with Mayer Brown LLP.

Next week, MBA keeps it going with MBA LIVE: Technology Solutions, taking place June 1-2. MBA LIVE: Technology Solutions provides an update on the state of the industry and how technology can be used to pivot and advance in the wake of COVID-19. This is an opportunity to confront our shared challenges as an industry with a goal toward finding solutions for progress during unprecedented times. This unique platform will allow attendees to engage with one another as well as industry leaders and technology experts to gather information, insights and resources – everything you need to know to plan for the future.

Speakers include Broeksmit; William S. Packer, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer with American Financial Resources Inc.; MBA Chief Economist Michael Fratantoni; Bill Killmer, MBA Senior Vice President of Legislative and Political Affairs; and Pete Mills, MBA Senior Vice President of Residential Policy and Member Engagement.

MISMO gets into the act, too. The MISMO Virtual Spring Summit takes place June 3-5. The MISMO Summits offer you an opportunity to learn more about MISMO and to engage in standard setting activities. Educational sessions are designed to meet the needs of everyone from those new to MISMO, those with years of experience.

General sessions will feature education focused on three themes: New and emerging technologies and what they may mean for the industry; Reducing costs, increasing margins, and delighting your customers; and latest updates on reporting requirements from the GSEs and other housing agencies

The MBA Forbearance & Call Volume Report, which normally comes out on Monday, will be released today, May 26 at 4:00 p.m. ET; MBA NewsLink will provide a special afternoon issue with the results. MBA also releases its Weekly Applications Survey this Wednesday, May 27.

Congress is in recess this week because of yesterday’s holiday; the House and Senate return to Washington—in the House’s case, some virtually—next week.
