ATTOM: August Foreclosure Filings Up From July, Down From 2022

ATTOM, Irvine, Calif., reported in its August 2023 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report that there were 33,952 U.S. properties with foreclosure filings. That’s up 7% from July but down 2% year-over-year.

One in every 4,113 units had a foreclosure filing in August. ATTOM defines foreclosure filings as default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions.

On a state-by-state basis, the highest foreclosure rate was in Nevada, where one in every 2,224 housing units had a foreclosure filing. That was followed by Illinois (one in every 2,433), South Carolina (one in every 2,506), New Jersey (one in every 2,585) and Delaware (one in every 2,618).

Lenders started the foreclosure process on 22,899 properties in August, up 9% from last month but down 4% from August 2022.

States that saw the greatest monthly increases (and had 100 or more foreclosure starts) were Louisiana, up 40%, California, up 32%, Tennessee, up 32%, Alabama, up 30%, and Florida, up 28%.

In August, 3,354 U.S. properties were repossessed via completed foreclosures, up 1% from July but down 15% from a year earlier.

States with the largest number in that category were Illinois (324), Pennsylvania (253), Ohio (250), New York (205) and Texas (191).
