Mortgage-Backed Securities Issuance Remains Robust

U.S. mortgage-backed securities’ issuance was $3.3 trillion for the first nine months of 2021, 22.5% higher than the year-ago figure. After a fast pace in the first half when $2.3 trillion was issued, MBS new issues slowed to $948.6 billion in the third quarter, down from $1.1 trillion in the year-earlier quarter. But the latest quarterly figure is still more than 50% higher than two years ago.
