Mulvaney Taps Brian Johnson as Bureau Acting Deputy Director

It’s been a busy few weeks at the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection/Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, personnel-wise.

Last month, the Trump Administration nominated Kathy Kraninger as the Bureau’s Director, to replace Acting Director Mick Mulvaney (who replaced Richard Cordray, who left the Bureau late last year to run for governor of Ohio).

Kraninger’s nomination apparently put an end to Leandra English’s legal bid to serve as Director (English was tapped by Cordray, but has been denied from taking the position through several court rulings in favor of Mulvaney). Last week, English announced her departure from the Bureau and dropped her lawsuit; yesterday, Mulvaney announced her (temporary) replacement, appointing Brian Johnson, who currently serves as Principal Policy Director at the Bureau, to assume responsibilities of Acting Deputy Director.

“Brian Johnson is the first person I hired at the Bureau and has been an indispensable advisor,” Mulvaney said. “Brian knows the Bureau like the back of his hand. He approaches his role as a public servant with humility and unsurpassed dedication. His steady character, work ethic and commitment to free markets and consumer choice make him exactly what our country needs at this agency.”

Prior to Johnson’s appointment to the Bureau, he served as senior counsel to Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, on the House Financial Services Committee.
