MBA Statement on Hurricanes Harvey and Irma Relief Efforts
David Stevens, CMB, President & CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association, released the following statement in response to questions about what steps homeowners should take if their homes suffered damage from Hurricanes Harvey or Irma:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people impacted by these terrible storms. We are receiving a lot of questions from homeowners who don’t even know where to begin as they start to assess the damage.
“The first call you should make is to your loan servicer. That is the company you make your monthly mortgage payment to. These companies have plans and programs to help you through this difficult time, but they need to hear from you. Second, call your hazard or homeowners insurance company. It’s important to get the ball rolling with them immediately. And finally, call FEMA [the Federal Emergency Management Administration] and apply for disaster aid. They have a number of resources to help. Call 800-621-3362 or visit www.disasterassistance.gov.”
MBA has established a webpage, www.mba.org/hurricanerelief, that offers tips and resources for homeowners, as well as contact information for loan servicers who have customers in the impacted areas.
