–Tell us a little about yourself

Hello, I’m Dana Hamilton, a proud resident of Dunn, NC, my hometown. I attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, before returning home to begin my career. I had the unique opportunity to serve as the community’s first Tourism Director, which launched my professional journey in marketing.
I later transitioned into banking, where I served as a Marketing Director for a community bank for 12 years and earned my Certified Financial Marketing Professional (CFMP) designation in 2017. In October 2019, I embraced a new challenge by joining the mortgage team at First Federal Bank. While I did not have a background in mortgage at the time, I was confident that my experience in banking, leadership roles, and marketing would provide a strong foundation.
Stepping into a new career path in the second phase of my life has been incredibly rewarding. It has allowed me to grow professionally, expand my industry knowledge, and continue building meaningful relationships while serving others in my community.
–How did you learn about the MBA Path to Opportunity Program? What inspired you to become more involved? Did a co-worker/supervisor/mentor encourage your participation?
I learned about the Path to Opportunity scholarship while exploring the MBA website. Eager to maximize my MBA membership and deepen my understanding of residential mortgage operations, I was immediately interested and applied. While no one specifically encouraged me to apply for the scholarship, my drive to grow professionally and build industry connections motivated me to pursue the opportunity. Additionally, everyone in banking knows how expense discipline is a daily focus, so anytime there is an opportunity for a scholarship rather than add expense is a win.
–Did you find the application process to be user-friendly?
Yes, I will graduate this year and become a certified Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) and have received a scholarship all three years, a valuable cost savings to the bank.
–How has the Path to Opportunity scholarship benefited you, personally and professionally? What have you been able to bring back to your company as a result of the Path to Opportunity program?
The Path to Opportunity scholarship has been incredibly beneficial both personally and professionally. It has given me access to a wealth of industry knowledge, training, and networking opportunities that I would not have otherwise experienced at this stage in my career. Personally, it has strengthened my confidence as I continue to grow in the mortgage industry, especially after making a mid-career transition.
Professionally, the program has provided me with a deeper understanding of the operational side of residential mortgage lending, allowing me to better support my team and serve our customers more effectively. I have been able to bring back valuable insights on best practices, industry trends, and compliance considerations, which have enhanced my day-to-day contributions. Additionally, the connections I’ve made through the program have been a tremendous resource, giving me access to peers and mentors across the industry.
–Any advice for someone else who is considering applying for a Path to Opportunity scholarship?
My advice would be to absolutely apply and not hesitate, even if you feel like you may not check every box. If you have a genuine desire to learn, grow, and contribute to the mortgage industry, this program is an incredible opportunity. Be authentic in your application, share your story, and clearly express why expanding your knowledge will make a difference not only in your career but also in your organization.
Also, be prepared to fully engage in the experience if selected. Take advantage of every learning opportunity, ask questions, and build relationships. The more you invest in the program, the more you will gain from it.
