–Tell us a little about yourself

Today, I serve as an Assistant Vice President at Fay Group, where I focus on transaction management, capital markets operations, and mortgage loan transactions. Much of my work involves connecting operational execution with the broader mortgage market, helping ensure transactions move efficiently from purchase through sale.
Getting to this point has been an interesting journey.
I was born in Michoacán, Mexico, and spent part of my childhood in Honduras before immigrating to the United States at age 14. When I arrived in Illinois, I spoke no English and found myself adapting to a completely new language, culture, climate, and way of life. It was a difficult transition, but it taught me resilience, perseverance, and the value of creating opportunities through education and hard work.
One of my earliest memories after arriving in the United States was driving past beautiful homes on the way to drop my father off at work. I remember asking how people were able to own homes like that and being told that it was something families like ours could only dream about. That moment stayed with me. It sparked a curiosity about homeownership and the kind of opportunities that brought my family to this country in the first place.
Along the way, I attended the College of Lake County and later continued my education at Lake Forest College while working to support myself and my family.
What keeps me passionate about this industry today is the opportunity to help others achieve goals that once felt out of reach for my own family. Homeownership can be life-changing, but many people simply don’t know what options are available to them. Outside of work, I enjoy helping friends, family members, and others navigate the homebuying process, understand their choices, and make informed decisions.
—How did you learn about the MBA Path to Opportunity Scholarship? Beyond its financial appeal, what else inspired you to apply? Did a co-worker/supervisor/mentor encourage your application?
I’ve always viewed education as one of the most powerful investments you can make in yourself. Throughout my career, I’ve actively looked for opportunities to expand my knowledge and better understand the forces that drive the mortgage industry. When I learned about the MBA Path to Opportunity Program through MBA communications, I immediately recognized it as an opportunity to gain practical, industry-specific education that aligned directly with the work I was doing. At the time, I was looking to strengthen my understanding of secondary markets and the broader mortgage ecosystem, making the program a natural fit.
Several mentors encouraged me along the way. My boss at a previous company spoke highly of MBA’s education programs and encouraged me to pursue them. Later, after joining Fay Group, my manager and mentor Brian McGivern supported my participation in a second MBA course that helped expand my understanding of capital markets and mortgage-backed securities.
For me, the appeal of the Path to Opportunity Program was simple: it offered access to education that could immediately translate into better performance, greater knowledge, and long-term career growth. The scholarship removed barriers and allowed me to focus on learning.
—Did you find the application process to be user-friendly?
Absolutely. The application process was straightforward, well organized, and easy to navigate. The requirements were clear, and whenever I had questions, the MBA team was responsive and helpful. The process felt designed to encourage participation rather than create barriers, which I greatly appreciated.
–How has the Path to Opportunity Scholarship benefited you, professionally and/or personally?
The Path to Opportunity scholarship has been one of the most valuable educational experiences of my career. Beyond the coursework itself, it reinforced something I’ve always believed: learning creates opportunity. The mortgage industry is constantly evolving, and the program challenged me to think more broadly about the business, ask better questions, and continue investing in my own growth.
The courses helped me develop a much deeper understanding of secondary markets, mortgage-backed securities, capital markets, and the broader mortgage ecosystem. The first course provided a strong foundation across the industry, while the second filled critical knowledge gaps that became increasingly important in my role at Fay.
What made the experience especially valuable was how quickly I could apply what I learned. The coursework gave me a stronger understanding of the relationship between operational processes, market dynamics, and transaction execution. As a result, I was able to analyze information more effectively, contribute at a higher level, and better support the strategic initiatives our team was working on.
The knowledge gained through the program also played a meaningful role in my career progression. It helped prepare me for new responsibilities, broadened my perspective, and gave me greater confidence in areas that were previously unfamiliar.
Most importantly, the scholarship provided access to educational opportunities that might not otherwise have been available to me. It accelerated my growth, expanded my horizons, and continues to influence how I approach my work today.
—Any advice for someone else who is considering applying for a Path to Opportunity scholarship?
Go for it – apply!
The worst outcome is that you don’t receive the scholarship this time and you can always apply again in the future. The best outcome is that you gain access to education that can significantly impact your career and professional growth.
The mortgage industry offers incredible opportunities for people who are willing to learn, and the knowledge gained through MBA courses is valuable whether you plan to stay in mortgage banking long term or pursue other opportunities within financial services. The concepts, relationships, and analytical skills you develop are highly transferable.
For me, the Path to Opportunity program was exactly what its name suggests – a pathway to new opportunities, new knowledge, and new professional possibilities. I would encourage anyone who is considering applying to take advantage of it.
