AMELIA ISLAND, Fla.—MBA President and CEO Bob Broeksmit, CMB, opened MBA’s Independent Mortgage Bankers conference with a tribute to longtime mortgage industry leader Kurt Pfotenhauer.

Pfotenhauer, executive vice president and vice chairman of First American Title Insurance Co., played many roles during his decades of service to the real estate finance sector, including with MBA and the American Land Title Association in addition to First American. He passed away Jan. 21.

“Unfortunately, I must start this conference on a sad note,” Broeksmit said. “Kurt Pfotenhauer’s fertile and active mind, his energy, and his dedication to our industry have made MBA a stronger organization and helped countless individuals succeed. His extraordinary service to and support of MBA over the last two decades is without peer–starting back when he was part of MBA’s staff, serving as senior vice president of government affairs and continuing during his long tenure at First American.”
Broeksmit noted Pfotenhauer served several terms on MBA’s Board of Directors and was MISMO’s Board Chairman and on the board of the MBA Opens Doors Foundation. “In 2019, MBA honored Kurt by bestowing on him the Woodward Distinguished Service Award–the highest honor an individual can receive from his peers,” Broeksmit said.
“With Kurt battling cancer, last fall the Board voted to rename MBA’s Schumacher-Bolduc Award in his honor,” Broeksmit said. “It is awarded to individuals who exemplify MORPAC’s mission and display commitment to expanding the reach of MBA’s political advocacy efforts. We also paid tribute to him last March in Colorado at our Mid-Winter Conference, which Kurt was a driving force behind.”
Broeksmit noted Pfotenhauer’s many friends, colleagues and his family will gather in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. on Friday, Feb. 6 to mourn his loss and celebrate his remarkable life. “We send our heartfelt condolences to Kurt’s wife, Nancy, and the entire family. We will miss him greatly.”
Broeksmit then led the 700-plus IMB attendees in a moment of silence in honor of Pfotenhauer.
