Keelen Sexton is Builder Forward Commitment Desk Manager with D.R. Horton.
–Tell us a little about yourself
My name is Keelen Sexton, and I’m from Central Texas. Since graduating from Texas State University with a BBA in Finance in 2019, I’ve had the opportunity to build my career with D.R. Horton, beginning in the Mortgage Mastery program and progressing through roles in Compliance and Capital Markets before becoming Builder Forward Commitment Desk Manager.
Today, I lead a team focused on mortgage pricing strategy and capital markets operations while supporting initiatives that help make homeownership more accessible for borrowers.
As housing affordability has become more challenging for many people in my generation, including friends and family members, I’ve become increasingly passionate about the role our industry plays in creating opportunities for homeownership. Although much of my work takes place behind the scenes, I value being part of a process that can help make homeownership more attainable for borrowers.
I’ve also developed a strong interest in mentorship and helping others grow. Throughout my career, I’ve benefited from leaders who invested in my development, and I enjoy paying that forward by supporting the growth of others. Outside of work, I enjoy fitness, investing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
–How did you learn about the MBA Path to Opportunity Program? What inspired you to become more involved? Did a co-worker/supervisor/mentor encourage your participation?
I learned about the program through D.R. Horton’s internal leadership development efforts, and I was encouraged to apply by leaders and mentors who have played an important role in my professional growth.
What drew me in was the opportunity to learn from experienced industry professionals, build relationships across the mortgage industry, and gain new perspectives that I could bring back to my team and organization. The program’s focus on developing future leaders made it an opportunity I was excited to pursue.
–Did you find the application process to be user-friendly?
Yes, it was clear and well-organized from start to finish. The questions encouraged me to reflect on my career path, leadership experiences, and long-term goals, which made the process feel less like an application and more like an opportunity to share my story.
–How has the Path to Opportunity scholarship benefited you, personally and professionally? What have you been able to bring back to your company as a result of the program?
Personally, the scholarship reinforced my confidence as a leader and challenged me to continue investing in my own development. Professionally, it has provided valuable learning opportunities, industry insights, and relationships with peers from across the country.
Through the Future Leaders program, I’ve gained new perspectives on collaboration, strategic thinking, and team development that I’ve already started applying within my role. From how I approach delegation to how I support the growth of the people I manage, the experience has helped me become a more effective leader. Those lessons will continue to benefit both my team and organization well beyond the program itself.
Any advice for someone else who is considering applying for a Path to Opportunity scholarship?
Apply and be honest about your story. Share where you’ve been, where you want to go, and the impact you hope to make within the industry. The value of the Path to Opportunity program goes far beyond financial support. It provides access to a network of professionals, development opportunities, and experiences that can have a lasting impact on your career.
