Zillow, Seattle, released data on the top search trends for various home features in 2024, finding interest in housing variety and character.
The top search terms for home attributes featured the following words, including some variations:
• Ranch (or ranch-style)
• Lake
• Duplex
• Cabin
• Farms
• Acreage
• Garage
• Loft
• Luxury
• Furnished
While that’s a national look, the top search terms did vary by state and region. For example, warm-weather locales like California, Florida and Texas saw lots of searches for “pool.” Garage and ranch were high on lists in cold or rural states.
Parts of California and Indiana saw the phrasing “allow small dogs” the most often. Those looking in Arizona, Tennessee, Florida and Colorado used searches for “pet-friendly” or “barn.”
Maine had “farms” in its top three–the only state to see that search term so high. And, Mississippi searchers stood alone with “backyard” in their top three.
Scenic states such as Michigan, Hawaii, Idaho, North Carolina and Alaska saw a lot of searches for “lake,” “beachfront” and “cabin.”
“Downtown,” “loft” and “high-rise” did well in New York, Pennsylvania and Georgia.
“Luxury” and “views” were popular in states such as California, New Jersey, Texas and Nevada.
And, Zillow rounded up some of the most unique search terms, too, including someone in Michigan looking for “laser tag” and someone in Colorado querying “roller coaster.” At least one shopper in 22 states looked for a “haunted” home, and Illinois, Ohio and Oregon each saw the search term “spooky.”
Zillow used data from its AI-powered natural search language feature for the analysis.
