Allied Van Lines, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., released its annual U.S. Migration Report, analyzing Americans’ moves in 2025.
The report noted a 3% overall drop in relocations from 2024 to 2025. However, trends did show particular interest in midsize cities, particularly in the Southeast.
The top inbound states for movers last year were South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, New York and Florida. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Carolinas and Tennessee have placed at the top of the list.
Top inbound cities largely included midsize metropolitan areas, with Myrtle Beach, S.C., first, followed by Boise, Idaho, West Palm Beach, Fla., Charlotte, N.C., and Dallas.
The top outbound states for movers were Illinois, Michigan, California, Nevada and Pennsylvania. Illinois, California and Pennsylvania have been on the top outbound states since 2022.
The top outbound cities were Los Angeles, followed by San Diego, Chicago, Houston and Seattle.
In terms of when moves happen, Americans seem to stay consistent in moving later in the week or over the summer. The top three months to move in 2025 were June, July and May. And Friday was deemed the top day to move, followed by Tuesday and Wednesday.
