CBRE: Boston, New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles Top Life Sciences Subsectors Lists

CBRE, Dallas, released its latest U.S. Life Sciences Talent Trends report, analyzing life sciences employment by subsector and identifying which cities constitute the “top markets” for each.  

Boston/Cambridge topped the research and development subsector, followed by the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington, D.C.,/Baltimore, New York/New Jersey and Los Angeles/Orange County.

New York/New Jersey was the top of the manufacturing subsector, with Boston/Cambridge, Chicago, Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area rounding out the top five.

Los Angeles/Orange County was No. 1 for the medtech subsector. Next were Minneapolis, Boston/Cambridge, the San Francisco Bay Area and New York/New Jersey.

Seven markets ranked within the top 10 of all three subsectors: Boston/Cambridge, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles/Orange County, San Diego, Philadelphia and Chicago. Boston/Cambridge had the highest average ranking.

CBRE noted that job growth across life sciences has stagnated somewhat since interest rates began rising in 2022, but demand for talent remains strong.

“The overall theme for the U.S. life sciences industry last year and this year is resiliency,” said Matt Gardner, CBRE Americas Life Sciences Leader. “We expect life sciences employment to hold steady over the next year and to perhaps decline in a few markets. But this talent is valuable–life sciences specialists who leave one job often find another quickly.”
