San Francisco Passed an Ambitious Plan for New Housing. What’s Happened Since? Nothing
San Francisco Chronicle, June 26, 2023–David Brockman (subscription)
Last year, San Francisco dodged a bullet. State law required the city to make a plan to triple how many homes are built here every year — to over 10,000 units annually — or face draconian consequences. If the city failed to write this plan, or if the state didn’t think it was strong enough, San Francisco would have faced a nightmare scenario: missing out on millions in state funding and losing local control over housing altogether — meaning the city would be all but powerless to stop a row of Trump Towers being built along Ocean Beach.
