(One in a continuing series of profiles of participants in the MBA Education Path to Diversity (P2D) Scholarship Program, which enables employees from diverse backgrounds to advance their professional growth and career development.)

Ashley Puckett

Ashley Puckett is Senior Capital Markets Analyst with Vellum Mortgage, an independent mortgage bank in Fairfax, Va. She began in the industry in September 2011 as a Loan Processor. From there she moved into Post Closing for a few years, then in Secondary Marketing, “which I love.”

“I am a #boymom to two wonderful buddies, ages 3 ½ and 2 ½. When I’m not busy with my professional life, you can catch me in Atlanta trying to keep up with my boys, hanging outside with my family, traveling, listening to live music and exploring new recipes in the kitchen.”

NEWSLINK: How did you learn about the MBA Path to Diversity Program?

ASHLEY PUCKETT: I learned about the Path to Diversity Scholarship while looking at the [MBA School of Mortgage Banking] classes on the website. I read the criteria and decided to apply.

NEWSLINK: What inspired you to become more involved? Did a co-worker/supervisor/mentor encourage your participation?

PUCKETT: After seeing a few industry peers involved in Atlanta, I decided I wanted to do the same for myself. I have met so many incredible mortgage professionals in the last few years that I can truly call friends. I love having them to lean into if I have questions or need encouragement to take myself to the next level in my career. Working for a company like Vellum who has been super supportive of my individual, professional goals in taking SOMB classes, attending conferences, and networking events gives me the extra push to get out there and be even more involved within our industry.

NEWSLINK: Did you find the application process to be user-friendly?

PUCKETT: I thought the scholarship application process was super easy and very user-friendly.

NEWSLINK: How has the Path to Diversity scholarship benefited you, personally and professionally? What have you been able to bring back to your company as a result of the Path to Diversity program?

PUCKETT: The Path to Diversity Scholarship has afforded me the ability to learn more about our industry and do a deeper dive into topics that I did not know as much about. I have met incredible connections during my SOMB classes so far that you cannot put a price tag on. I have been able to bring back education and networking resources to my company, which are very valuable in our current market cycle.

NEWSLNK: What would you say to someone considering applying for a Path to Diversity scholarship?

PUCKETT: I would say go for it. I think the reward of getting the scholarship far outweighs the risk of receiving a “no” if you apply.
