The Week Ahead, Apr. 17, 2023: On-Site at the MBA National Advocacy Conference

Good morning and happy Monday! MBA NewsLink comes to you onsite this week from the MBA National Advocacy Conference, which takes place Tuesday, Apr. 18 and Wednesday, Apr.19 at the JW Marriott in Washington, D.C.

MBA welcomes hundreds of its members to D.C. this week to experience the largest advocacy event of the year focused solely on the issues facing the real estate finance industry. MBA’s National Advocacy Conference is the only advocacy event focused solely on real estate finance issues. NAC features members of Congress, informative policy briefings, and the traditional meetings on Capitol Hill with elected officials.

MBA will also present its Burton C. Wood Legislative Service award on Tuesday.

Also underway here in D.C. today and tomorrow is the MBA State & Local Workshop, designed for leaders and key stakeholders of state and local associations.

Now, here’s what else is happening this week:

MBA Reports. MBA kicks things off this afternoon (Monday, Apr. 17) with its monthly Loan Monitoring Survey (formerly the MBA Forbearance and Call Volume Survey). MBA Vice President of Industry Analysis Marina Walsh, CMB, will provide commentary and analysis.

MBA also kicks off two weeks of housing performance reports on Tuesday, Apr. 18 with its monthly Builder Applications Survey, with commentary and analysis from MBA Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist Joel Kan.

On Wednesday, Apr. 19,MBA releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey, with Kan again providing commentary and analysis.

Congress. The House and Senate are back in session this week—just in time for the MBA National Advocacy Conference.

The Senate Banking Committee has no hearings scheduled this week. However, the House Financial Services Committee holds three hearings of interest this week:

Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler visits the Financial Services Committee this Tuesday, Apr. 18, for a hearing on “Oversight of the Securities and Exchange Commission.” The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn House Office Building and can be accessed online here. On Wednesday, Apr. 19, the Financial Services Committee holds a hearing, “Understanding Stablecoins’ Role in Payments and the Need for Legislation.” The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn and can be accessed online here.
