The (Short) Week Ahead, Sept. 6, 2022: What You Need to Know

Good morning and happy Tuesday! We hope you had a great Labor Day weekend. Here’s what’s happening over the next several days:

First, Congress. We haven’t talked about Congress for more than a month, largely because it’s been in recess since early August. But the House and Senate return to Capitol Hill today.

Having said that—don’t expect much. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8—little more than two months away—and all 435 House seats, 34 Senate seats and several dozen governorships are on the table. This could be the most dynamic mid-term election cycle in decades, and that is top of mind for most members of Congress. Legislation is likely to take a back seat until after the elections.

Nonetheless, there is business at hand. House and Senate committees continue to work on Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations for most government agencies, with the goal of avoiding a government shutdown—or even a Continuing Resolution to punt the budget down the line.

Neither the Senate Banking Committee nor the House Financial Services Committee hold hearings week.

For more information about the House and Senate, visit www.house.gov and www.senate.gov, respectively. Second, MBA Conferences. The Mortgage Bankers Association’s grassroots advocacy arm, the Mortgage Action Alliance, holds its Quarterly Webinar on Thursday, Sept. 8 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. ET.

The MAA Quarterly Webinar provides MBA Mortgage Action Alliance members (and prospective MAA members) with a legislative briefing on current MAA Calls to Action and other topical issues facing the industry. The Legislative & Political Affairs team will provide an update on how MBA has remained engaged with Congress and the administration and outline priority issues in the new year.

And of course, just around the corner, the MBA Annual Convention & Expo. The biggest real estate finance industry event of the year—the MBA Annual Convention & Expo—takes place Oct. 23-26 at the Music City Center in Nashville.

Academy Award-winning actress, singer and dancer Rita Moreno; former House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.; and legendary basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will deliver keynote remarks. And Concert MBA this year features Darius Rucker.

MBA Annual22 is less than two months away. The largest annual gathering of real estate finance professionals, this is the one event you need to gain access to the industry’s power players and innovators.
