The Week Ahead, Sept. 26, 2022: What You Need to Know

Good morning and happy Monday! Here’s what you need to know this week:

First, MBA Annual22. The MBA Annual Convention & Expo—the biggest real estate finance industry event of the year—is less than a month away, taking place Oct. 23-26 at the Music City Center in Nashville.

Academy Award-winning actress, singer and dancer Rita Moreno; former House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.; and legendary basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will deliver keynote remarks. And Concert MBA this year features Darius Rucker.

Second, MBA Reports. The MBA Weekly Applications Survey comes out on Wednesday, Sept. 28, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan.

Also this week, look for a couple of announcements from MISMO, including the MISMO Life of Loan and Business Glossary User Guide and information on MISMO MEG-23.

Third, Other Economic Reports. Here is this week’s economic/housing report schedule; those that MBA NewsLink will cover are in italics:

Monday: Chicago Fed National Activity Index; Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey

Tuesday: S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller House Price Indixes; Consumer Confidence; New Residential Sales; Advance Durable Goods; Richmond Fed Survey of Manufacturing Activity

Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey; Pending Home Sales

Thursday: Initial Claims; Gross Domestic Product

Friday: Personal Income/PCE Deflator; University of Michigan Consumer Survey (final)

Fourth, Congress. Nothing is ever simple in Washington, and with fiscal year 2022 ending this Friday, Sept. 30, Republicans and Democrats are not yet agreed on how to fund the government for fiscal 2023, which begins Oct. 1.

Senate Democrats, who have been trying to appease Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., for most of the past couple of years, appeared last week to have a deal in place that would give Manchin a piece of low-hanging fruit that would change the federal construction permit process for oil and gas interests (per The Hill). However, Senate Republicans—and a couple of Senate Democrats, including Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va.—are objecting to the language, which is putting Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) plan to cut off debate this week in jeopardy—Schumer needs 60 votes to end debate, and he doesn’t have those votes as of press time.

Neither side wants to see a government shutdown, not with Election Day just five weeks away. Analysts expect a Continuing Resolution, which would temporarily continue funding the government, to emerge this week, and possibly until after the elections. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, committee work is relatively quiet this week, with observance of Rosh Hashana on Monday and Tuesday. The Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing on Thursday, Sept. 29 on Examining Outbound Investment. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.mn. ET in Dirksen Senate Office Building room 538 and can be accessed online here.
