The Week Ahead, Nov. 28, 2022: Back to Business

Good morning, and happy Monday! We hope you had a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Now, back to business: here’s what’s happening this week:

First MBA Reports. On Wednesday, Nov. 30, MBA releases its MBA Weekly Applications Survey, with commentary and analysis from MBA Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist Joel Kan.

Second, Other Economic Reports. It’s the end of November, which means the last monthly housing reports; and the start of December which means the focus shifts to jobs reports. Here’s this week’s reports; those MBA NewsLink will cover are in italics:

Monday: Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey

Tuesday: S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller House Price Indices; Consumer Confidence

Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey; ADP National Employment Report; Gross Domestic Product 2nd Release; JOLTS (Job Openings & Labor Turnover Survey; Pending Home Sales

Thursday: Initial Claims; Personal Income/PCE Deflator; Construction; Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Report

Friday: Employment Situation (with commentary and analysis from MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni)

Third, Congress. The 117th Congress stumbles to a close over the next few weeks; with both the House and Senate scheduled to adjourn Dec. 22. According to Molly Reynolds, Senior Fellow with the Brookings Institution:

“Two fiscal issues are likely to be a major focus of the last weeks of the 117th Congress: getting an omnibus spending bill done and deciding whether or not to deal with the debt limit.”

Reynolds notes the current measure funding discretionary federal programs expires on Dec. 16, so avoiding a partial government shutdown requires action before that deadline. “Prior to the passage of the current stopgap measure in September, factions of House and Senate Republicans had lobbied to run a temporary spending bill into January 2023 in possible anticipation of a new majority with different spending priorities,” she says.

Stay tuned.

Neither the Senate Banking Committee nor the House Financial Services Committee has hearings scheduled the rest of this month.
