The Week Ahead, Mar. 7, 2022: 4 Things to Know
Good morning and happy Monday! Here’s what’s happening in the real estate finance world this week:
First, MBA. The Mortgage Bankers Association releases two reports of interest this week: the MBA Weekly Applications Survey on Wednesday, Mar. 9 Will applications fall for a fourth consecutive week? And will the Russian invasion of Ukraine send mortgage interest rates further down? Stay tuned; MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan will provide commentary and analysis.
And on Thursday, MBA releases its monthly Mortgage Credit Availability Index, with commentary and analysis from Kan as well.
Also this week, the MBA Mid-Winter Conference is underway in Avon, Colo., running through Wednesday, Mar. 9.
Second, Economic Reports. With most of the major jobs reports out of the way (see today’s NewsLink for MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni’s take on Friday’s employment numbers), here are this week’s reports (those that MBA NewsLink will cover are in boldface):
Tuesday: Trade Balance; Wholesale Trade
Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey; JOLTS (Job Openings & Labor Turnover Survey)
Thursday: Consumer Price Index; Initial Claims
Friday: University of Michigan Consumer Survey (Preliminary)
Third, Congress. The ongoing war in Ukraine has turned just about everything upside down, including the world economy and even Congress, which came together in a rare moment of unity last week to emphatically condemn Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. (The unity lasted for about a minute.)
The House and Senate are in session this week. The Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing this Tuesday, Mar. 8 on Examining Mandatory Arbitration in Financial Service Products.
Slated to testify: Paul Bland, Executive Director of Public Justice; Remington A. Gregg, Counsel for Civil Justice and Consumer Rights with Public Citizen; Todd J. Zywicki, George Mason University Foundation Professor of Law; and Myriam Gilles, Paul R. Verkuil Research Chair and Professor of Law.
The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Dirksen Senate Office Building room 538 and can be accessed online here.
On the other side of the Capitol, the House Financial Services Committee holds a hearing on Tuesday, Mar. 8 on The Inflation Equation: Corporate Profiteering, Supply Chain Bottlenecks, and COVID-19. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Russell House Office Building room 2128 and can be accessed online here.
