The Week Ahead, Mar. 28, 2022: 5 Things to Know

Good morning and happy Monday! Here’s what’s happening in the real estate finance world this week:

Second, MBA Reports. The MBA Weekly Applications Survey comes out this Wednesday (8:00 a.m. ET), with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan. Interest rates have been jumping lately; tune in Wednesday morning to see what happens this week.

Third, Other Housing/Economic Reports. This week we wrap up the month-end housing reports and shift our focus to a slew of March employment data. Reports that MBA NewsLink will cover are listed in boldface:

Monday: Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey

Tuesday: S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Housing Market Indices; Consumer Confidence; JOLTS (Job Openings & Labor Turnover Survey)

Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey; ADP National Employment Report; Gross Domestic Product 3rd Release

Thursday: Initial Claims; Personal Income/PCE Deflator

Fourth, Congress. With another occasionally contentious Supreme Court confirmation hearing out of the way, the House and Senate shift focus to other matters.

The Senate Banking Committee holds two hearings of interest this week. On Tuesday, Mar. 29, the Committee holds a hearing on Economic Impact of the Growing Burden of Medical Debt. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Dirksen Senate Office Building Room 538 and can be accessed online here.

On Thursday, Mar. 31, the Banking Committee holds a hearing on Affordability and Accessibility: Addressing the Housing Needs of America’s Seniors. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 538 Dirksen and can be accessed online here.

On the other side of the aisle, the House Financial Services Committee holds several hearings of interest this week.

On Tuesday, Mar. 29, the full Committee holds a hearing on Devalued, Denied, and Disrespected: How Home Appraisal Bias and Discrimination Are Hurting Homeowners and Communities of Color. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Rayburn House Office Building room 2128.

On Wednesday, Mar. 30, the Financial Services’ Task Force on Artificial Intelligence holds a hearing on Keeping Up with the Codes – Using AI for Effective RegTech. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn.

Also on Wednesday, Mar. 30, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets holds a hearing on Oversight of America’s Stock Exchanges: Examining Their Role in Our Economy. The hearing begins at 2:00 p.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn.

On Thursday, Mar. 31, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Financial Institutions holds a hearing on The End of Overdraft Fees? Examining the Movement to Eliminate the Fees Costing Consumers Billions. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn.
