The Week Ahead, July 25, 2022: The Fed and Five Other Things to Know

Good morning and happy Monday! Here’s what’s happening this week:

First, the Federal Reserve. The Federal Open Market Committee is in Washington this week for its regularly scheduled policy meeting. The FOMC meets this Tuesday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 27 and will issue its policy statement Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Economists and pundits—including MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni—have the FOMC pegged for another 75 basis-point increase in the Federal Funds rate. But no one is ever absolutely sure until the FOMC issues its statement.

MBA NewsLink will provide coverage of the meeting, with Fratantoni providing commentary and analysis, in the Thursday, July 27 edition.

Second, MBA Reports. Another busy week for MBA. On Tuesday, July 26, MBA releases its monthly Purchase Applications Payment Index, an affordability index that measures how new fixed-rate 30-year purchase mortgage payments vary across time relative to income.

Edward Seiler, MBA Associate Vice President of Housing Economics and Executive Director of the MBA Research Institute for Housing America, will provide commentary and analysis.

MBA also releases its Weekly Applications Survey this Wednesday, July 20, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Industry and Economic Forecasting Joel Kan.

Third, Other Economic Reports. Housing reports remain on center stage this week, but other aspects of the economy show up in month-end reports as well. In addition to the MBA PAPI, we’ll see the New Residential Sales report from HUD/Census (Tuesday, July 26); and the Pending Home Sales Index from the National Association of Realtors (Wednesday, July 27).

Here are this week’s other economic reports; those that MBA NewsLink will cover are in italics:

Monday: Chicago Fed National Activity Index; Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey

Tuesday: MBA Purchase Applications Payment Index; New Residential Sales; S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Indices; Consumer Confidence; Philadelphia Fed Non-Manufacturing Survey; Richmond Fed Survey

Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey; Pending Home Sales Index; Advance Durable Goods

Thursday: Initial Claims; Gross Domestic Product

Friday: Employment Cost Index; Personal Income/PCE Deflator; University of Michigan Consumer Survey (final)
