The Week Ahead, July 18, 2022: Five Things to Know

Good morning and happy Monday! Here’s what’s happening this week:

First, MBA Reports. This is a very busy week for MBA reports, starting today (Monday, July 18 with the monthly MBA Loan Monitoring Survey (formerly the MBA Forbearance & Call Volume Survey).

The Survey comes out at 4:00 p.m. ET. MBA Vice President of Industry Analysis Marina Walsh, CMB, will provide commentary and analysis.

On Tuesday, July 19, MBA releases its monthly Builder Applications Survey, with MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan providing analysis and commentary.

MBA also releases its Weekly Applications Survey this Wednesday, July 20, with commentary and analysis from Kan.

Second, Other Economic Reports. Housing reports take center stage this week. In addition to the MBA Builder Applications Survey, we’ll see the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (Monday); the HUD/Census Bureau report on June housing starts (Tuesday); and the National Association of Realtors’ take on June existing home sales (Wednesday).

Third, Congress. The House and Senate are in session this week. The Senate Banking Committee and the House Financial Services Committee hold several hearings of interest.

On Tuesday, July 19, the Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing Fairness in Financial Services: Racism and Discrimination in Banking. The Committee will hear testimony from Steven Nesmith, Vice President and Director/Head of Federal Policy with the Center for Responsible Lending. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Dirksen Senate Office Building 538 and can be accessed online here.

Also on Tuesday, July 19, the Banking Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development holds a hearing on Opportunities and Challenges in Addressing Homelessness. The hearing begins at 2:30 p.m. ET in 538 Dirksen and can be accessed online here.

Also on Tuesday, July 19, the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets holds a hearing on Oversight of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Rayburn House Office Building room 2128 and can be accessed online here.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra visits the House Financial Services Committee this Wednesday, July 20 for a hearing on Housing in America: Oversight of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn and can be accessed online here.
