The Week Ahead Jan. 18, 2022: Six Things to Know
Good morning and Happy Tuesday! We hope you had a safe and happy holiday. Here are six things to know this week:
First, the MBA Independent Mortgage Bankers Conference & Expo. The MBA Independent Mortgage Bankers Conference is less than a week away, taking place Jan. 24-27 in Nashville, Tenn.
IMB22 is the epicenter for IMBs of all sizes and models and their leadership teams. Hear new solutions, actionable advice, and the data and analytics you need to improve your bottom line. From in-person networking to peer-to-peer sharing – it’s all here.
MBA NewsLink will provide on-site coverage of IMB22. For more information and to register, click here.
Second, CREF 22. The MBA Commercial Real Estate Finance/Multifamily Housing Convention & Expo takes place Feb. 13-16 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.Join us in person again at the largest commercial/multifamily industry event of the year. Sunny San Diego presents endless opportunities to network and secure deals for the coming year and beyond.
Keynote speakers include Academy Award-winning actress, dancer and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Rita Moreno; singer-songwriter and founder of Five for Fighting John Ondrasik (“Superman,” “100 Years,” “The Riddle“); MBA Chair Kristy Fercho and MBA President & CEO Robert Broeksmit, CMB.

Third, MBA Reports. MBA releases its monthly Builder Applications Survey this Thursday, Jan. 20; MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan will provide analysis and commentary.
MBA also releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey this Wednesday, Jan. 19, with Kan providing commentary and analysis.
Fourth, Housing & Economic Reports. Today kicks off a busy two weeks of housing reports. Those marked in boldface indicate reports of which MBA NewsLink will provide coverage):
Tuesday: National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index; Empire State Manufacturing Survey
Wednesday: New Residential Construction
Thursday: Initial Claims; Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Survey; Existing Home Sales
Fifth, Congress. It appears that the Biden Administration’s efforts to pass federal voting rights legislation and to make changes to the Senate filibuster are dead once and for all, with President Biden unable to persuade Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., into support. The House approved voting rights legislation last week, but without Manchin and Sinema’s support in the Senate, Democrats lose their razor-thin majority required to pass the bill.
The White House, meanwhile, will resume its efforts to pass its Build Back Better legislative relief package, trying once again to placate Manchin.
The Senate Banking Committee is quiet this week; the House Financial Services Committee holds two hearings of interest this week.
On Wednesday, Jan. 19, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations holds a hearing on Ensuring Equitable Delivery of Disaster Benefits to Vulnerable Communities and Peoples: An Examination of GAO’s Findings of the CDBG Program. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. in 2128 Rayburn House Office Building and is also available online (see below for link).
On Thursday, Jan. 20, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development and Insurance holds a hearing on Ending Homelessness: Addressing Local Challenges In Housing the Most Vulnerable. The virtual hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET.
House Financial Services Committee hearings can be accessed online here.
