NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Good morning and Happy Tuesday! MBA NewsLink comes to you this week from the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Independent Mortgage Bankers Conference & Expo. More about that and five other things to know this week:

Third, the Federal Reserve. The Federal Open Market Committee meets this week amid more signs of inflation and pressure to raise the federal funds rate (currently at 0-0.25 percent, where it has been since March 2020. MBA projects the FOMC to raise the federal funds rate three times in 2022; the only question is, when?

The FOMC meets this Tuesday, Jan. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 26 and will issue its policy statement at 2:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday. MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni will provide commentary and analysis of the Fed meeting in the Thursday, Jan. 27 edition of MBA NewsLink.

Fourth, MBA Reports and Housing/Economic Reports. MBA releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey this Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 7:00 a.m. ET; MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan will provide analysis and commentary.

The parade of housing and economic reports continue this week, as indicated below. Those marked in boldface indicate reports of which MBA NewsLink will provide coverage):

Tuesday: S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Indices; Philadelphia Fed Non-Manufacturing Index; Consumer Confidence; Richmond Fed Manufacturing Survey

Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey; Federal Open Market Committee Statement; New Residential Sales

Thursday: Initial Claims; Advance Durable Goods; Gross Domestic Product; Pending Home Sales

Friday: Employment Cost Index; Personal Income/PCE Deflator; U. of Michigan Consumer Surveys (final)

Fifth, Congress. With efforts to pass federal voting rights legislation and to make changes to the Senate filibuster at Square One (again), the Biden Administration said it will work with House and Senate leaders on a smaller version of its Build Back Better legislative relief package in an effort to reach common ground with recalcitrant Democrats—and even Republicans.

Neither the Senate Banking Committee nor the House Financial Services Committee have hearings scheduled this week.
