The Week Ahead, Feb. 14, 2022: CREF 22 and 4 Other Things to Know

SAN DIEGO—Good morning and happy Monday! MBA NewsLink is coming to you this week here at the MBA Commercial Real Estate Finance/Multifamily Housing Convention & Expo running through Wednesday, Feb. 16 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

CREF is the largest commercial/multifamily industry event of the year. More than 2,200 commercial real estate professionals are here to wheel, deal and participate in informative general sessions and breakout sessions.

Keynote speakers include Academy Award-winning actress, dancer and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Rita Moreno; singer-songwriter and founder of Five for Fighting John Ondrasik (“Superman,” “100 Years,” “The Riddle“); MBA Chair Kristy Fercho and MBA President & CEO Robert Broeksmit, CMB.

And before you exhale, the biggest mortgage servicing event of the year, the MBA Servicing Solutions Conference and Expo, is just around the corner, taking place Feb. 22-25 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando. MBA NewsLink and MBA Servicing NewsLink will have onsite coverage next week.

Here’s what else is happening in the real estate finance world this week:

First, Presidents Day. MBA offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 21 in observance of the Presidents Day holiday. MBA NewsLink will not publish. On behalf of MBA officers and staff, have a safe and happy holiday.

Second, MBA and Housing/Economic Reports. It’s a busy week for MBA. On Sunday, MBA released its year-end ranking of commercial and multifamily mortgage servicers’ volumes. This morning, MBA releases its 2021 Commercial Real Estate/Multifamily Survey of Loan Maturity Volumes; its Quarterly Survey of Commercial/Multifamily Mortgage Bankers Originations; and its 2022 Commercial/Multifamily Mortgage and Finance Forecast, with analysis and commentary from MBA Vice President of Commercial/Multifamily Jamie Woodwell.

On Tuesday, Feb. 15, MBA releases its monthly Mortgage Credit Availability Index, with MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan providing analysis and commentary.

On Wednesday Feb. 16, MBA issues its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey (7:00 a.m. ET); with Kan providing analysis and commentary.

And on Thursday, Feb. 17, MBA releases its monthly Builder Applications Survey, with Kan again providing commentary and analysis.

Third, Congress. The House and Senate are in session this week; the Senate Banking Committee and the House Financial Services Committee each hold hearings of interest this week.

The Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing on Thursday, Feb. 17, The State of the American Economy: A Year of Unprecedented Economic Growth and Future Plans.

The hearing features members of the White House Council of Economic Advisors. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Dirksen Senate Office Building room 538 and can be accessed online here.

The House Financial Services Committee holds three hearings this week. On Wednesday, Feb. 16, the full committee holds a virtual hearing on An Unprecedented Investment for Historic Results: How Federal Support for MDIs and CDFIs Have Launched a New Era for Disadvantaged Communities. The hearing begins at noon ET.

On Thursday, Feb. 17, the Subcommittee on National Security, International Development and Monetary Policy holds a virtual hearing on The Role of the International Monetary Fund in a Changing Global Landscape. The hearing begins at noon ET.

Also on Feb. 17, the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Financial Institutions holds a virtual hearing on Small Businesses, Big Impact: Ensuring Small and Minority-Owned Businesses Share in the Economic Recovery. The hearing begins at 3:00 p.m. ET.
