The Week Ahead, Aug. 8, 2022: Five Things to Know

Good morning and happy Monday! Hope you are staying cool in your neck of the woods. Here’s what’s happening this week:

First, MBA Reports. MBA releases its monthly Mortgage Credit Availability Index (MCAI) this Tuesday, Aug. 9, with analysis and commentary from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan.

MBA also releases its Weekly Applications Survey this Wednesday, Aug. 10, with commentary and analysis from Kan.

Second, Other Economic Reports. Here are this week’s other economic reports; those that MBA NewsLink will cover are in italics:

Monday: (no reports)

Tuesday: MBA Mortgage Credit Availability Index; Productivity and Costs (preliminary)

Wednesday: MBA Weekly Applications Survey; Consumer Price Index; Wholesale Trade

Thursday: Initial Claims

Friday: Imports/Exports; U. of Michigan Consumer Survey (preliminary))

Third, Congress. Senate Democrats keep plugging away at the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the massive reconciliation bill that is a cornerstone of the Biden Administration’s fiscal policy; votes are slated for this week.

As reported in MBA NewsLink on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., agreed to drop a controversial “carried interest” provision in the bill after threats by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., to withdraw her critical vote. MBA and a number of industry trade groups also opposed the carried interest provision, as detailed in a letter sent last Thursday.

The Senate on Saturday agreed to move forward with a vote on the bill, which expected this week.

Following the vote the Senate is expected to join the House in recess until after the Labor Day holiday. The House and Senate are slated to return on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
