The Week Ahead Oct. 25, 2021: Four Things to Watch
Good morning and happy Monday (someone has to say it). Mortgage Bankers Association staff are back in Washington following an exhilarating Annual Convention & Expo in San Diego that drew nearly 3,500 attendees. And now, we begin planning for next year’s Annual Convention & Expo (Oct. 23-26 in Nashville).
Between now and then, there’s plenty of other things to discuss. So here we go with four things to look for. Read on!
First, MORE MBA Conferences. Yes, the big one is out of the way, but MBA Annual21 marked just the start of a busy seven-month period of in-person conferences across the country, including:
· , Grand Hyatt Nashville
· — MISMO Winter Summit 2022, Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa

· — Commercial/Multifamily Finance Convention & Expo, Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego

Second, Congress. If you look up the word “slog,” in the dictionary, you see a picture of Congress (well, not really—but you should). Democrats in the House and Senate keep paring down and whittling the Biden Administration’s proposed infrastructure package to appease recalcitrant party holdouts (and yes, Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Krystin Sinema, D-Ariz., we’re talking about you), but a final package—which will get no help from Republicans in either chamber—still appears to be a ways off.
Add to that efforts to increase voting protections at the federal level; another looming debt limit debate and new interest in abolishing the filibuster, and you have an interesting few weeks coming up in Congress.

Third, MBA kicks off another busy week of reports. The MBA weekly (for now) Forbearance & Call Volume Survey comes out this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET. MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni will provide analysis and commentary in Tuesday’s MBA NewsLink.
On Wednesday, Oct. 27, MBA will release its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan.
Fourth, Economic Reports. The last week of the month is always heavy on housing reports:
Monday: the Chicago Fed National Activity Index and the Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey
Tuesday: Philadelphia Fed Non-Manufacturing Survey; S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Housing Price Indices; Consumer Confidence; New Residential Sales; Richmond Fed Survey; and the Dallas Fed Texas Retail Outlook Survey
Wednesday: Advance Durable Goods; Advance International Trade In Goods
Thursday: Gross Domestic Product; Initial Claims; Pending Home Sales
Friday: Employment Cost Index; Personal Income and the PCE Deflator; University of Michigan Consumer Survey
