The Week Ahead—Jan. 11, 2021

Good morning! So, you thought 2021 couldn’t get any crazier than 2020?

What a week: a riot in and around the U.S. Capitol, which many called a “coup” attempt—itself an extraordinary event in U.S. history; an unusual special election in Georgia for not one, but both of the states Senate seats that saw Democrats win both—and swing the balance of power in the Senate from Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.; and finally, in the wake of the riots and calls on both sides of the aisle to impeach (again) or even invoke the 25th Amendment, a long-overdue concession from Donald Trump that a peaceful transfer of power would take place on Jan. 20, when Joseph Biden Jr. becomes the 46th President of the United States.

Following last week’s violence, MBA President & CEO Robert Broeksmit, CMB, issued a statement, which you can find here.

Politics aside—and who knows what will happen this week—murder hornets? An invasion by Canada? MTV starts playing music again?—things should be a little quieter. The House and Senate are adjourned until after the Biden/Harris inauguration (Wednesday, Jan. 20). But lots could happen between now and then, as we saw last week.
