ADP: January Private-Sector Employment Up 174,000
Ahead of this Friday’s employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and this morning’s initial claims report from the Labor Department, ADP, Roseland, N.J., said private-sector employment increased by 174,000 jobs from December to January.
The ADP National Employment Report said by company size, small business (1-49 employees) added 51,000 jobs in January; medium businesses (50-499 employees) added 84,000 jobs; and large businesses (500+ employees) added 39,000 jobs.
By sector, goods-producing businesses added 19,000 jobs; service-providing businesses added 156,000 jobs; and professional/technical services added 16,000 jobs.
“The labor market continues its slow recovery amid COVID-19 headwinds,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute. “Although job losses were previously concentrated among small and midsized businesses, we are now seeing signs of the prolonged impact of the pandemic on large companies as well.”
The initial claims report comes out at 8:30 a.m. ET this morning; the January employment report comes out at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday. MBA NewsLink will provide coverage, with commentary from MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni.
