The Week Ahead Dec. 6, 2021: Three Things to Know

Good morning! We hope you are enjoying the pre-holiday onslaught. Here are three things to look out for this week:

First, Housing and Economic Reports. The Mortgage Bankers Association releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey on Wednesday, Dec. 1, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan.

We also expect the MBA monthly Mortgage Credit Availability Index this week, with Kan again proving analysis on how lenders are extending credit to potential homebuyers.

Also this week, the MBA think tank, the Research Institute for Housing America, releases its periodic report on the effects of the coronavirus and mortgage loan forbearance on homeowners.

Other reports this week:

Tuesday: International Trade; Productivity & Costs (Revised); CoreLogic Home Price Index

Thursday: Initial Claims; JOLTS (Job Openings & Labor Turnover Survey); Wholesale Trade

Friday: Consumer Price Index; University of Michigan Consumer Survey (Preliminary)

Second, Congress. Congress dodged yet another bullet last week by approving another Continuing Resolution keeping the federal government open through Feb. 18. But plenty remains on the House and Senate plates, including ongoing negotiations (mostly intraparty at this point) over the Biden Administration’s Build Back Better legislative package. The House passed the bill last month, largely along party lines; Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., says he hopes to have a Senate vote the week of Dec. 13, but that, of course, depends on whether or not he has the support he needs from Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Krysten Sinema, D-Ariz. The situation remains fluid.

The Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 7 to consider the Biden Administration’s nomination of Brian Tomney as Inspector General of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Dirksen Senate Office Building room 538 and can be accessed online here.
