The Week Ahead

SAN DIEGO–For the Mortgage Bankers Association, the action shifts from New Orleans following last week’s Independent Mortgage Bankers Conference, to the west coast for the MBA annual Commercial Real Estate Finance/Multifamily Housing Convention & Expo.

The Convention—the largest gathering of commercial real estate/multifamily housing executives in the nation—runs through Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

The Mortgage Bankers Association releases its Weekly Applications Survey this Wednesday, Feb. 12. In addition, several MBA reports from CREF are already out: The MBA Year-End Commercial/Multifamily Servicer Rankings; the 4th Quarter Commercial/Multifamily Originations Report; and the 2020 MBA Survey of Loan Maturity Volumes. On Capitol Hill this week, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell makes his rounds to deliver the semi-annual Monetary Policy and the State of the Economy report.

Powell appears before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 10:00 a.m. ET in Rayburn House Office Building room 2128. The hearing can be accessed online at https://financialservices.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=406118.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, Powell appears before the Senate Banking Committee. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in Dirksen Senate Office Building room 538 and can be accessed online at https://www.banking.senate.gov/hearings/02/03/2020/the-semiannual-monetary-policy-report-to-the-congress.

Also this week, the Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing to consider several Trump Administration nominations (but not Brian Montgomery as HUD Deputy Secretary, who awaits a full Senate vote).

The committee will consider nominations of Jessie Liu to be Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Crimes with the Department of the Treasury; Judy Shelton and Christopher Waller as Members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.  

The hearing takes place on Thursday, February 13 at 10:00 a.m. ET in 538 Dirksen and can be accessed online at https://www.banking.senate.gov/hearings/02/03/2020/nomination-hearing.

Back on the House side, the Financial Services Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion holds a hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 12 on A Review of Diversity and Inclusion at America’s Large Banks. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn and can be accessed online at https://financialservices.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=406119.

Also on Feb. 12, the Financial Services Task Force on Artificial Intelligence holds a hearing on Equitable Algorithms: Examining Ways to Reduce AI Bias in Financial Services. The hearing begins at 2:00 p.m. ET in 2128 Rayburn and can be accessed online at https://financialservices.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=406120.
