The Week Ahead—Dec. 7, 2020

Good morning and happy Monday! Hang in there—we’re almost through 2020!

The MBA virtual Accounting & Financial Management Conference 2020 is ready to go, taking place online this Wednesday, Dec. 9 and Thursday, Dec. 10. The conference brings together leading authorities in real estate finance to share critical business intelligence, insights and best practices on evolving accounting, regulatory and financial management issues.

MBA NewsLink will provide coverage. It’s not too late to register; for more information, click https://www.mba.org/store/events/meetings/meeting/conference/mba-live-accounting-and-financial-management-conference-2020?check_for_mini_site=Y.

MBA releases its Weekly Forbearance and Call Volume Survey (Monday, 4:00 p.m. ET); its monthly Mortgage Credit Availability Index this Tuesday, Dec. 8; and its Weekly Applications Survey this Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 7:00 a.m. ET. And rumor has it there might be an MBA Commercial/Multifamily Mortgage Debt Outstanding report this week as well, although we couldn’t confirm that as of press time.

Capitol Hill should be interesting this week. It’s technically the last week of the 116th Congress, but we expect the House and Senate to linger a bit into next week. As of press time, there appear to be sincere efforts on the part of both House and Senate Democrats and Republicans to pass a final stimulus bill to sustain the faltering U.S. economy into 2021. The bill is not a big as Democrats want; and it’s not as small as Republicans want, which suggests that compromises—the historic heart and soul of legislation—are underway. Ultimately, if neither party is happy with the final result, it means something got done right. Stay tuned.

Neither the Senate Banking Committee nor the House Financial Services Committee have hearings scheduled this week—which suggests they are serious about wrapping up business, too. We don’t expect any hearings until the 117th Congress organizes in January.

Today (Monday, Dec. 7) marks the 79th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
