MBANow: MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni on MBA Secondary 2017
The Mortgage Bankers Association released a new MBANow video on YouTube featuring MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni, who discusses the upcoming MBA National Secondary Market Conference and Expo.
The video can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2X-nnq_KOE&feature=em-uploademail.
At the conference, MBA will release its updated white paper calling for reform of the secondary mortgage markets. MBA released a preliminary white paper this past January, GSE Reform Principles and Guardrails (https://www.mba.org/issues/residential-issues/gse-reform-principles-and-guardrails?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=mba.org&_zs=iS2FG1&_zl=rsQa3), outlining key topics for reform.
The paper calls for ending the conservatorship of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and establishing a new, durable foundation for the secondary mortgage market with explicit guarantees for mortgage-backed securities. Specifically, the paper outlines a preferred end-state; principles that should be incorporated in any future system; key components and guardrails of the end-state; and emphasizes the need to ensure a smooth transition to a reformed secondary mortgage market.
“This paper is going to take a deeper dive,” Fratantoni said. “It’s going to describe an end state; how to get to that end state; our views on how to address affordable housing challenges in the country.”
Fratantoni and members of the MBA Task Force for a Future Secondary Mortgage Market will engage in a panel discussion at the conference outlining the new paper.
The conference will also feature columnist and former Reagan Administration speechwriter Peggy Noonan; representatives of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae; and a number of general sessions and concurrent sessions.
The MBA National Secondary Market Conference & Expo takes place Apr. 30-May 3 at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. For more information, visit the conference website, https://www.mba.org/conferences-and-education/event-mini-sites/national-secondary-market-conference-and-expo-2017.
