Nearly 400 MBA members attended the National Advocacy Conference, which took place June 20-21 in Washington, D.C. They met with elected officials and discussed important issues facing the real estate finance industry.

“What we do helps generate and create the pathway to homeownership for American families,” said MBA President and CEO David Stevens, CMB. “The ability to articulate [our] views is important for consumers and in creating effective policy.”

“This is our industry,” said Amy Swaney, CMB, branch manager with CityWide Home Loans, Scottsdale, Ariz. “And if we want to be the ones that direct this industry, we need to make sure that each of us take the individual responsibility to make sure we are directing our industry in the way it should be going.”

“I grew up during the housing crisis,” said Tonisha Williams, membership member with the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association, Austin, Texas. “Being a child at the time and seeing how it affected my parents makes me realize how important it is for our members to be protected and to make sure their customers are protected.”

“This is the best conference of the year for advocacy,” said MBA Chairman-Elect J. David Motley, CMB, President of Colonial Savings, Fort Worth, Texas. “It gives us the opportunity to get in front of our Congressmen with a distinct, concise message that promotes homeownership for all consumers throughout the country and it’s a great opportunity to really have a concentrated message that we can share with our elected representatives.”
