MBANow: Bill Killmer Discusses Trump Administration, 115th Congress

The Mortgage Bankers Association released a new MBANow video on YouTube featuring MBA Senior Vice President of Legislative and Political Affairs Bill Killmer, how provided an update on the Trump Administration, the new Congress and what’s next for housing policy.

The video can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8On40QnRxwk&feature=em-uploademail.

KillmerBillKillmer described an “interesting dynamic” in Washington, with the Trump Administration getting its feet wet and still awaiting approval of many of its Cabinet nominees, including Ben Carson as HUD secretary and Steven Mnuchin as Treasury secretary, while Congress begins to examine key legislative and regulatory issues, such as repeal of parts of the Dodd-Frank Act and GSE reform.

“We expect these confirmations soon,” Killmer said. “Just as important is filling in those sub-Cabinet positions, such as the Deputy [Treasury] secretary, or at HUD, the FHA commissioner and the Ginnie Mae president, so that you’ve got a full team.”

On housing and finance reform, Killmer expressed optimism that MBA would see some action this year.

“I’m expecting action from the authorizing committees, Chairman [Mike] Crapo [R-Idaho] with the Senate Banking Committee and Rep. [Jeb] Hensarling [R-Texas] with the House Financial Services Committee, probably in the third or fourth quarter,” Killmer said. “That is why it’s so critical that MBA rolled out its Task Force for the Future of the Secondary Market report, so that we can stimulate that conversation and as we put more meat on the bones over the next couple of months I think the timing will be great for that dialogue.”
