MBANow: MBA Economist Lynn Fisher on Housing Demographics

The Mortgage Bankers Association released anew MBANow video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK73VaZuM3I&feature=em-uploademail). MBA Vice President of Research and Economics Lynn Fisher discussed changing household demographics and what that means for the real estate finance industry.  

Fisher noted forecasts suggest as many as 16 million new households could be formed in the next decade. “The younger part of that population will be more diverse, but we’ll also see a substantial number of households of people over the age of 60,” she said. “We have to think about housing demand in different ways.”  

Fisher said supply will remain a challenge for the industry. “Even though we are pretty far into recovery, the single-family industry housing construction industry is just getting back up to speed,” she said. “It’s going to take a while to catch up and support that demand.”
