MBA Warns of Scam, Other Unauthorized Uses of Association Logo

The Mortgage Bankers Association yesterday warned its members of an online scam involving emails featuring the MBA logo offering money in exchange for personal information.

The poorly written emails come from a person claiming to be a managing director from “Bankers Association Warehouse.” The email include the MBA logo and lists MBA headquarters in Washington, D.C. as its address. It notifies the recipient that he/she has been granted a credit facility of $2.5 million, in exchange for providing personal information, including bank account numbers. It lists an email address that is inconsistent with MBA email guidelines.

Further, MBA has been made aware of other improper uses of MBA-related trademarks that have the effect of misrepresenting a group or person’s affiliations with MBA.

MBA reminds members of the following guidelines regarding its mass email communication:

–All mass email communications are sent through MBA’s third party vendor, INFORMZ. You will see its logo at the very bottom of all of MBA emails unless such emails are sent from a specific MBA staff member.

–All mass emails include MBA’s trademarked logo, the MBA address and the ability to opt out or unsubscribe to mailings.

–Most of MBA mass emails will come from MBA’s general email box (mba_mail@mba.org), which will appear next to the name of the sender.

If you receive an email in which you are uncertain or skeptical of its origin, you should immediately move the email to your “junk” folder and contact your information technology administrator. If you have questions related to groups claiming affilation with or endorsement by MBA, you can contact MBA directly at 1-800-793-6222 (select option 1) or email membership@mba.org
