Rently, Los Angeles, released its 2026 Renter Touring Expectations Report, finding that prospective renters have strong preferences when it comes to how they pick rental units–47% report choosing or seriously considering a less ideal rental unit just because it was more convenient to tour.

Only 12% said tour convenience wouldn’t affect their rental decision, and 68% said they have lost interest in a property because scheduling a tour was too difficult.

Forty-two percent of renters want a self-guided tour they can take on their own schedule, but renters still want a human touch, too–57% say they want a person available to answer questions about fees, rent or lease terms.

Tour characteristics are used as an indicator for other opinions about the property, respondents said–if a tour process is disorganized, 56% assume management might also be disorganized. And, 39% assume the property may not be well-maintained and 32% expect that maintenance at the property would be slow.

Renters compared the rental touring experience to other common online booking experiences–56% said ordering groceries for delivery is easier than scheduling a tour, and 50% said booking a restaurant reservation is easier.
