Schwartz Joins H.I.G. Bayside Capital as Head of U.S. Distressed Commercial Real Estate
Global alternative asset firm H.I.G. Capital hired Steven Schwartz, former Head of Acquisitions and Originations at Torchlight Investors LLC, as a Managing Director responsible for distressed commercial real estate.

Schwartz was a partner at Torchlight for more than six years and served on its board of directors as well as its investment and operating committees. Prior to Torchlight, he spent almost 20 years at JP Morgan where he ran the commercial mortgage-backed securities and commercial real estate banking groups.

Grandbridge Promotes Mason
Grandbridge Real Estate Capital, Charlotte, N.C., named Brett Mason senior vice president and manager of its Raleigh, N.C., loan origination office.

Mason previously served as a senior vice president in NorthMarq Capital’s Raleigh office. He has arranged debt and equity solutions utilizing Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, commercial mortgage-backed securities, life insurance company and bank funding sources. Active in commercial mortgage banking since 2002, Mason has successfully originated a broad spectrum of complex financings and helped his clients with the entire capital stack for commercial real estate transactions.

Mason succeeds Gordon White III, who previously served as senior vice president and market leader of Grandbridge’s Raleigh loan origination office. White was recently named program director of Grandbridge subsidiary BB&T Real Estate Funding, an on-balance-sheet debt origination platform.

Additional Raleigh new hires include Mason’s former Northmarq team members Grant Harris as Vice President/Senior Transaction Manager and Emily Whelan as Assistant Vice President.

Harris’ background includes commercial real estate loan analysis for all property types, underwriting, loan sizing and property/market research. He has loan structuring and program requirement experience with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, banks, insurance companies and bridge capital providers.

Whelan has commercial real estate investment analysis, loan closing and servicing coordination and commercial property evaluation experience.

Berkadia Hires Dan Hawkins in Washington, D.C.
Berkadia added Senior Director Dan Hawkins to its Washington, D.C. office.

With more than a decade of industry experience, Hawkins joined the hotels and hospitality group to expand the firm’s investment sales platform on a regional and national level.

Prior to joining Berkadia, Hawkins was a senior financial analyst with CBRE. He has served Washington, D.C.’s Southwest Business Improvement District as a board member and on Intercontinental Hotel Group Owner’s Association Emerging Leaders Council Executive Committee.

Crowder Joins Venable’s Real Estate Practice in New York
Venable LLP expanded its real estate practice by adding Angela Crowder as counsel in the New York office. Crowder joined the firm from Stone Pigman Walther Wittmann LLC, in New Orleans.

Crowder focuses her practice on commercial real estate and finance. She has worked on a variety of leases and development agreements and regularly advises on private financings, purchase and sales agreements, joint ventures, loan sales, workouts, construction contracts, and general corporate matters. She also has experience in the structuring, negotiation, and documentation of credit facilities. She works with public benefit corporations, developers, private companies, borrowers, and lenders.
