Not everyone can afford to make the standard 20 percent down payment when buying a home. It can be even more difficult to do as housing prices rebound. But you can buy a house and put down less than 20 percent. When you do that, your lender also requires that you pay for mortgage insurance-a cost that the lender adds to your monthly bill.
