DENVER–“You’re the most important part of what the [Mortgage Bankers Association] does in D.C.,” said former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner to an audience gathered at MBA’s Annual Convention & Expo Oct. 29.

MBA President and CEO Bob Broeksmit, CMB, interviewed Boehner on the main stage, and inquired about how the MBA and its members can most effectively articulate their position on taxes in 2025–regardless of which party wins the presidency, House control and Senate control.

Many provisions in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expire at the end of next year.

“The association in D.C. plays a big role. The people that you have that lobby Congress play a big role,” Boehner said. “All of you out there and your colleagues in the association play a bigger role.”

“Members of the House, members of the Senate want to get know you–they want you to vote for them,” he said. “They don’t want you to get to know their opponent, or to vote for their opponent or to give money to their opponent. So trust me, you are big players when it comes to dealing with your member of Congress.”

Broeksmit agreed. “That is what I say all the time. I’m the hired help,” he joked. “But when we bring them members who live and vote in the district, and employ people in the district, and provide financing in the district…boy, do they perk up.”

“With your help, with your engagement, there’s just no limit to what you can accomplish,” Boehner continued. “Be there.”
