The Week Ahead Sept. 13, 2021: Five Things to Watch
Good morning! Welcome to another busy week for the real estate finance industry. Here are Five things to watch for this week:
First, MBA Conferences are Back! The Mortgage Bankers Association’s fall conference schedule is underway—and for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic, they are once again live and in person.
The MBA Regulatory Compliance Conference is currently underway here in Washington, running through Tuesday, Sept. 14. MBA President and CEO Robert Broeksmit, CMB, will deliver a keynote address this morning, which we will cover in the Tuesday, Sept. 14 edition of MBA NewsLink.

Second, Congress. The House and Senate continue work this week on a number of outstanding issues, such as the massive Biden Administration-supported infrastructure bill and budget/spending bills for fiscal 2022. The bills are now in the vote-counting stage, as leaders in both parties and in both chambers “whip” fellow legislators into support—or compromise.
The Senate Banking Committee welcomes Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler this Tuesday, Sept. 14 for a hearing, “Oversight of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.” The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. ET in 538 Dirksen Senate Office Building and can be accessed online here.
The House Financial Services Committee does not have hearings scheduled this week but has a full slate of hearing on tap beginning Sept. 21. For more information, click here.
Looking ahead, the Federal Open Market Committee will hold its regularly scheduled policy meeting on Sept. 21-22.
Third, MBA kicks off another busy week of reports. The MBA weekly Forbearance & Call Volume Survey comes out this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET. MBA Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni will provide analysis and commentary in Tuesday’s MBA NewsLink.
MBA also releases its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey this Wednesday, Sept. 15, with commentary and analysis from MBA Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting Joel Kan. On Thursday, Sept. 16, MBA will (tentatively) release its monthly Builder Applications Survey, with Kan providing commentary and analysis as well.
Fourth, Economic Reports. This week’s economic reports include the Consumer Price Index (Tuesday); the Empire State Manufacturing Survey (Wednesday); Imports/Exports (Wednesday); Industrial Production/Capacity Utilization (Wednesday); Advance Retail Sales (Thursday); Initial Claims (Thursday); Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Survey (Thursday); Business Inventories (Thursday): and the preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Surveys (Friday).
Fifth, MBA Conferences. The MBA Risk Management, QA and Fraud Prevention Forum, taking place through MBA Live Sept. 28-29, is the largest annual event for mortgage professionals in the risk, quality control, underwriting and fraud prevention divisions of residential mortgage firms across the country.
